2009 Design Competitions

It’s time once again for the 11th annual GEN ART Styles International Design Competition and Runway Awards! It is a chance for emerging designers to showcase their work at a high profile runway show in mid May attended by some of the most influential names in the fashion industry. 25 finalists will be chosen to show their looks from over 800 applicants for a chance to win a $5,000.00 Award for Design Excellence.
The five catagories are: Women’s Ready to Wear, Women’s Eveningwear, Menswear, Women’s Avant-garde, and of course…Accessories! Submissions will be reviewed at a pre-selection event in mid-April by top buyers and editors of Vogue, Teen Vouge, Elle, WWD, Barney’s and Neiman Marcus.
GenArt is the leading arts and entertainment organization that dedicated to showcasing emerging talent in film, art, fashion and music. They have office location in New York, Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco and produce over 120 events ranging from week-long film festivals, product launches and star studded fashion shows.

Saturday March 21, 2009 Union Station’s Great Hall (210 South Canal Street) will host Gen Art’s Shop Chicago, a spectacular event featuring over 70 emerging fashion and accessory designers. You can sip on complimentary cocktails or enjoy some pampering at the Shop Chicago Beauty Lounge while checking out the designers spring collections.
Tickets are available online now, so mark your calendars and get ready to kiss those winters blues goodbye with a day of magnificent shopping, fabulous cocktails and some pampering.

Handbag Designer 101 is one of my daily must reads. They are the comprehensive resource for the indie handbag designer with bag trends, jobs and services, and a daily featured designer.
I find it inspirational read about the varied backgrounds of each designer and love to see the astounding array of work that spans the globe. This year marks the Third Annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards which will be held June 17, 2009 at The New-York Historical Society. This year they have added two brand new categories: Best Use of CRYSTALLZED ™- Swarovski Elements and Best Shoe in Overall Style & Design. The other six categories are: Best Student Made Handbag, Most Socially Responsible Handbag, Audience-Selected Handbag (based on Finalists selected), Best Handmade Handbag, Best Green Handbag and Best Handbag in Overall Style & Design.
Five finalists will be chosen from each category at a Pre-Screening Event in April who will be invited to participate in the Independent Handbag Designer Awards. An event attended by over 500 members of the fashion industry including retailers and press and will be judged by esteemed handbag experts, stylists, buyers and editors alike.
I’ve been carefully working on my own submissions in special three piece collection, which incorporate some of my favorite materials and shapes in a whole new way. Though the process is a bit intimidating, I’m determined to submit pieces to both competitions…you never know unless you try!
